*Open Letter: Defending Dignity and Justice for All*
To:
- General Directorate of Migration (DGM), Dominican Republic
- Human Rights Organizations
- International Community
We, the Unforgettable Dessalines Jean-Jacques Movement (MUDJJ), express our deep concern regarding the recent incident involving two Haitian nationals who escaped from a DGM truck in Santo Domingo. This incident highlights the critical need for humane and equitable migration policies.
Dessalines, the founding father of Haiti, dedicated his life to the dignity and sovereignty of his people. His legacy impels us to oppose all forms of oppression and maltreatment. The use of aging vehicles and the absence of adequate oversight, as acknowledged by the DGM, are unacceptable and necessitate prompt reform.
We appreciate the investigation and disciplinary actions undertaken by the DGM. Nonetheless, additional measures are imperative:
- Modernize the vehicle fleet to ensure the safety and security of transport.
- Provide comprehensive training to staff on human rights and dignity.
- Address systemic issues that contribute to such incidents.
We call upon the Dominican Republic to uphold international human rights standards and treat every individual with respect. The MUDJJ stands in solidarity with Haitian migrants and advocates for justice, dignity, and compassion.
Sincerely,
Éliphete Joseph
President
